If you’re planning a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, especially with kids, you’re likely wondering which route is best, and least stressful, for your family. This is one of Malaysia’s most common multi-stop routes, especially for travellers combining Kuala Lumpur with Penang on a longer trip.
When we visited with our then 7-year-old, we felt overwhelmed by the choices: should we fly and deal with airports, take the train for the scenery, brave the long bus ride, or splurge on a private car for comfort?
We ended up flying, which worked really well for our short trip, but each option has its own advantages depending on your priorities, budget, and travel style.
This guide explains how to get from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, covering the pros, cons, costs, what to expect, and family-friendly tips, all drawn from our experience flying and careful research into the other options.

Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Penang (Fastest & Most Popular)
For families short on time or keen to avoid long travel days, flying is the quickest and simplest way to get from Kuala Lumpur to Penang.
Why Choose to Fly?
- Fast and efficient. The flight itself takes about an hour.
- Affordable if booked early, with return tickets starting around $50 AUD per person.
- Ideal if you want to maximize your time exploring Penang and avoid travel fatigue.
On our trip, we found flying very manageable even with a young child. While the full door-to-door journey (including transfers and waiting at the airport) took nearly as long as some slower options, it felt less tiring because the journey was broken into smaller, more manageable pieces so you can jump straight into the sights. See our Things to Do in Penang with Kids for ideas.
Airlines & Our Experience
The main airlines are AirAsia, Firefly, and Batik Air.
We flew with both AirAsia and Firefly and had no issues — both were budget-friendly, punctual, and perfectly adequate for such a short flight.
Family Tips for Flying
- Book early to avoid last-minute price hikes.
- Stick to hand luggage if possible to avoid baggage fees on budget airlines.
- Bring a tablet or small activity for kids. Ours was content with his iPad and a snack.
- Use the Grab app for easy transfers in Penang, which we found much better than queuing for taxis.
- If you’ll need mobile data during your trip, we always set up an Airalo eSIM before leaving to saves the hassle (and high cost) of buying SIM cards at the airport.
How to Book
You can compare fares on Skyscanner and then book directly with the airline for easier changes if needed. Alternatively, you can secure your flights through Expedia, which lets you bundle flights and hotels if you prefer a package (though I usually DIY for a better deal!)
Taking the Train from Kuala Lumpur to Penang (Scenic & Relaxed)
If you have more time and prefer a calmer, more scenic journey, the train is a lovely alternative — letting you enjoy the landscape before diving into Penang’s heritage streets and natural beauty.
We seriously considered this option because it skips airport hassle and offers a glimpse of Malaysia’s countryside, though ultimately we chose the flight.
What to Expect
- Departs from KL Sentral and takes about 4 hours to Butterworth, the station just across from Penang Island.
- From Butterworth, it’s a short ferry or Grab ride to George Town.
- Tickets cost around RM66–97 ($24–35 AUD) per person.
Why Choose the Train?
- More climate-friendly than flying.
- Comfortable seating with space for kids to move around.
- No security lines or transfers back to the airport.
- Toilets on board (always helpful with children).
- Pleasant countryside views, with palm groves and small towns along the way.
Family Tips for the Train
- Book seats in advance, especially for weekends and holidays.
- Bring your own snacks, games, and maybe a small blanket or pillow for comfort.
- Kids often enjoy the novelty of train travel — and watching the scenery go by.
How to Book
You can reserve seats in advance through 12Go Asia, which we like because you can easily compare schedules and prices, or directly on the KTM site.

Taking the Bus from Kuala Lumpur to Penang (Cheapest, But Longest)
For families on a budget, the bus is the most affordable option and it leaves you with more to spend on Penang’s great street food. But it is also the longest and least flexible.
We considered this route but decided against it due to unpredictable traffic and the lack of onboard toilets.
What to Expect
- Buses leave from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur.
- Journey time: 4–5 hours, sometimes longer depending on traffic.
- Tickets start around RM45 ($16 AUD) per person.
Why Choose the Bus?
- Cheapest way to travel.
- Direct service with no transfers.
- Comfortable enough on reputable operators with some offer reclining seats and air conditioning.
Family Tips for the Bus
- Not ideal for young kids, as there are no toilets onboard (though there is usually one scheduled bathroom stop).
- Choose a morning departure to avoid arriving late at night.
- Bring plenty of activities, snacks, and water to keep everyone happy.
- Book with a reputable company on 12Go Asia for reliability and verified reviews. This is the easiest way to see all your options in one place.
Hiring a Private Driver (Most Comfortable & Flexible)
If you’d like to turn the journey into part of your holiday, hiring a private car and driver is the most flexible and comfortable choice.
Although we didn’t take this option ourselves, we researched it thoroughly and spoke to families who recommended it highly, especially for multi-generational trips or those with lots of luggage.
What to Expect
- Door-to-door service from your KL hotel to your accommodation in Penang.
- Takes about 4 hours direct, but you can include sightseeing stops along the way (e.g., Ipoh or Cameron Highlands).
- Rates: around $320–350 AUD for the whole vehicle.
Why Choose a Private Driver?
- Completely flexible schedule.
- Perfect if you’re traveling with grandparents, multiple kids, or lots of bags.
- More comfortable and personal than public transport.
- Drivers often act as informal guides, sharing local tips and stories.
Family Tips for a Private Driver
- Plan your stops in advance and discuss them with the driver to make the most of the day
- Great for turning a travel day into a sightseeing experience.
How to Book
You can find and book drivers through Klook or GetYourGuide, both of which include reviews from other travellers and options for sightseeing stops.
So… What’s the Best Way to Get from Kuala Lumpur to Penang?
For our family, flying made the most sense: it was fast, affordable, and less exhausting for our young child.
However, the best choice really depends on your priorities:
- Short trips or families with kids and luggage? Fly or hire a private car.
- Longer trips at a relaxed pace? Take the train.
- Tightest budget? Take the bus.
- Want to turn travel into an adventure? Hire a private driver.
It’s worth remembering that door-to-door travel times can sometimes even out across options once you factor in transfers, waiting, and delays, but each offers a different kind of experience.
Whichever way you choose, the journey itself can be a memorable part of your Malaysian adventure and Penang is absolutely worth the trip and once you arrive, here’s our Penang Itinerary to help you plan the rest.
