If you’re planning a trip to Penang, don’t miss the chance to explore The Habitat Penang Hill, a peaceful jungle escape high above George Town, perfect for nature-loving families. We also included it in our Penang Itinerary as one of the highlights of our trip.
Penang Hill is one of the island’s most famous attractions, known for its cooler air, sweeping views, and historic charm. We couldn’t wait to ride the funicular and wander through the treetop walks, though visiting during Chinese New Year meant big crowds and long lines.
We ended up going twice. The first time, we decided to leave on the advice of a friendly staff member, as the lines were incredibly long and the hill was shrouded in fog, completely hiding the views. A few days later, we returned late in the morning under clearer skies and were finally able to enjoy the experience. Both times, though, we found moments of calm, connection, and fun that made it one of the highlights of our trip. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own adventure.

Why Visit Penang Hill?
Penang Hill offers an experience unlike anything else on the island.
- Panoramic views of George Town and the ocean, best when the skies are clear.
- Cooler temperatures at the summit, a refreshing change from the heat below.
- A mix of history and nature, with colonial bungalows, a colorful Hindu temple, and lush gardens to explore.
- Family-friendly fun, from spotting monkeys and squirrels to walking through the treetops at The Habitat.
At about 833 meters above sea level, the hill feels worlds away from the city. Even on a busy holiday, we found moments of quiet, especially once we stepped away from the crowds at the funicular and into the nature trails.

What to Expect When You Go
The Funicular Train
Your adventure begins with a ride on the Penang Hill funicular, one of the steepest trains in the world. The ride itself is fun and offers glimpses of the forest as you climb.
When we visited during Chinese New Year, the line for standard tickets stretched for over two hours, so we opted for express tickets and were on board in about 20 minutes. We booked these the night before, having seen how crazy the lines were on the foggy day. There was literally a line, to get into the line. It would have taken us around 2 hours without the fast pass.
Tips:
- Book tickets in advance on the official Penang Hill website.
- Standard ticket prices: Adults RM 16 / Kids RM 8.
- Express tickets: Adults RM 40 / Kids RM 20 — 100% worth it during peak times.
- Sit at the back of the train for the best views going up.
Even at its busiest, the ride was a highlight and once we reached the top, the crowds thinned out, leaving us space to explore.
At the Summit
Once you arrive at the top, there’s plenty to see and do:
- Observation decks offer sweeping views over the city and sea. Foggy days are quite common due to the humidity and on those days the views are hidden.
- The brightly painted Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan Temple, one of Penang’s oldest Hindu temples, welcomes visitors.
- Strolling past colonial bungalows and through gardens gives a sense of the hill’s British-era history.
- Kids will enjoy finding love locks and quirky photo spots scattered around the summit.

Food stalls, snack stands and fine dining restaurants are available though we didn’t eat there. We did have a quick drink at the Habitat Cafe before heading back to the funicular. Check their website for up to date places to eat.
Otherwise, head back into George Town for more variety, and next time we’ll also revisit some of the places from our Penang Food Guide for more great eats.

The Habitat Penang Hill
For us, The Habitat was the true highlight of Penang Hill. A peaceful, well-maintained nature reserve that felt far removed from the crowds outside. We also recommend pairing it with a visit to Entopia for another nature experience.
Tickets were a little expensive. Adults at RM60 (approx $21 AUD) and kids at RM40 (approx $15).
You enter through a beautifully restored pony stable from the 1800s, which sets the tone for the experience. From there, we wandered along shady trails, counted monkeys and squirrels, and even spotted a strange, colourful caterpillar.
Highlights:
- The Curtis Treetop Walk — a platform with breathtaking 360-degree views over the forest and city.
- The Langur Way Canopy Walk — a 230-meter suspension bridge hanging 40 meters above the jungle.
- Swings and photo spots along the way — perfect for kids and parents alike.
- A quiet café at the end of the trail, ideal for a drink and a slice of cake.
- A fun return ride on a golf buggy back to the entrance — fast, bumpy, and very entertaining.
Even during a busy holiday, The Habitat felt calm and uncrowded with many visitors not making their way to it.

Tips for a Memorable Visit
- Check the official Penang Hill website for peak dates, and consider express tickets during busy periods.
- Visit early in the day for clearer views and cooler temperatures.
- Bring water and a light layer — the summit is cooler but still humid.
- Plan to spend at least three hours if you want to explore the summit and The Habitat at a relaxed pace.
- Sit at the back of the funicular for the best views going up.
Even if you’re visiting during a holiday like we did, a little planning can help you enjoy the best of what Penang Hill offers.
Why We Loved Our Visit to The Habitat Penang Hill
Despite the holiday crowds and unpredictable weather, we came away from Penang Hill feeling it was one of the most memorable parts of our trip. The funicular was exciting, the views were stunning when the skies cleared, and The Habitat was a beautiful, peaceful escape that we all loved.
If you’re visiting Penang, especially with kids who enjoy exploring outdoors, this is a must-see. The combination of history, nature, and adventure made it a highlight and we’d gladly return to The Habitat for another walk through the treetops.
